DC Area Construction Training for Women
Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW), the Community Services Agency of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO, and Covenant House DC, have been awarded a contract from the General Services Administration to provide pre-apprenticeship training and job placement services for low-income metro area adults and youth (including adult and young women). The partners will be working to place training graduates into family-sustaining jobs in the construction industry from October 2009 through September 2010. Individuals will be academically tested, must be drug-free, and will attend a 6-week pre-apprenticeship class with an exciting and thorough curriculum which includes:
- Construction Math Review
- Blueprint Reading
- Tool Identification and Use
- OSHA 10 Safety and Health
- CPR/First Aid Certification
- Workforce & Employability Skill Training
- Green Jobs and Weatherization
- Hands-On Training (at the area’s union apprenticeship schools)
- Gender-Focused Topics Around Women in Construction
- Individual Mentoring and Support Groups for Women
- Case Management Services
- Pre-and Post-Placement will support apprenticeship and job retention.
