DC Metro Area Programs
The local programs and policy efforts of Wider Opportunities for Women are centered in the Washington, DC Metro Area. Like our national work, the centerpiece of our activities is the DC Family Economic Self-Sufficiency Project (DC FESS). Identifying strategies, advocating for policies and creating pathways to assist low-income women and their families achieve economic self-sufficiency are the common threads in our local program, which encompasses the following core initiatives:
House Appropriations Provides $5 million in FY11 Budget for DC's Core Victim Services!
Wider Opportunities for Women is pleased to report that the House Appropriations Committee has included a $5 million appropriation to support core victim services in the District. This restores local control of the District’s Crime Victims Compensation Fund, which has been under federal control since 1997. The fund is designated to assist crime victims and their families with expenses such as funeral costs, medical and mental health costs, and lost wages. Those who benefit are victims of violent crimes, including rape, robbery, domestic violence, child abuse, and the families of homicide victims.
WOW testified, served as an advisor to the campaign to return funds to the District, and will continue to monitor the implementation of these funds by the District of Columbia to ensure victims have services well into the future. For more information about this campaign, please visit: http://www.dcvsi.net
