Wider Opportunities for Women is at the forefront of promoting policies that help women and low-income families move toward economic security. WOW seeks individuals who are passionate about women's equality and economic independence. WOW needs capable, enthusiastic and dedicated interns to support our groundbreaking work.

Internships pay $15 per day to help cover transportation costs.

WOW is searching for interns for the summer 2012 semester. The deadline to apply is April 20, 2012. Please indicate the internship position to which you are applying.

1. The Research Intern- will have the opportunity to work across programs (national, local, policy) and learn many aspects of policy and economic research, advocacy and workforce development. Specific policy issues include workforce development, healthcare, asset development, public supports, entitlement programs, tax policy and gender issues.

The Research Intern will: assist with development of models and tools for policy analysis, data collection and management, and production of research reports. The research intern will also be able to attend local conferences and roundtable events.

Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in economics, public policy, social work, statistics or related field. Experience with basic spreadsheets preferred and additional experience with database applications is a plus. Candidates must also be interested in WOW’s policy issues.

2.The Policy Intern- will assist in steering the political conversation around women and families across the lifespan. WOW’s policy work includes advocacy in the form of sign-on letters, organizing, alerts and updates to WOW’s network of partners, and meetings with the administration, on the Hill and in the states.

The Policy Intern will: attend coalition meetings, briefings and congressional hearings on WOW’s policy issues (workforce development, healthcare, asset development, public supports, entitlement programs, tax policy and gender issues, etc.), monitor and analyze policy at the federal and state levels, develop policy memos and issue briefs, respond to state requests for information, update web resources, mobilize WOW’s partners through social media and blogging and otherwise disseminate federal policy information to our state partners and network members.

Candidates may have paralegal or Hill experience, and graduate-level applicants are preferred. The Policy Intern must be intimately familiar with WOW’s policy issues and able to read, interpret and draft legislative language.

3. The Resource Development/Fundraising Intern- will assist with fundraising tasks to support WOW’s work across programs (national, local, policy). WOW seeks to maintain and expand a diverse funding portfolio that includes government and private grants, individual donors, corporate partnerships, planned giving and annual fundraising through direct mail, email, and social media.

The Fundraising Intern will: contribute to the development of potential donor email lists; draft and proofread text for proposals, LOIs, solicitations, blog posts and other marketing materials; participate in creative brainstorming sessions with WOW staff members; attend relevant events and meetings and assist the Resource Development and Communications Officer with other tasks to be determined.

Candidates should have impeccable written and oral communications skills and demonstrated experience in roles that include fundraising, grant writing, marketing, writing, editing, design and layout, and social media. Also beneficial is an interest in WOW’s programs and policy issues. Experience using online email platforms, back-end website platforms, and fundraising is a plus. Remote work is an option for this internship.

4. The Communications Intern- will have the opportunity to work across programs (national, local, policy) and learn many skills and practices requisite to nonprofit communications. WOW is continually working to advance organizational communications with improved planning, outreach, and use of the latest software and technology, especially open-source technology. WOW works internally and with a PR firm to develop long-term communications strategy, attend to media inquiries, draft and edit Op-Eds and other written items, add WOW’s voice to the blogosphere and make savvy social media decisions to promote WOW’s brand and image.

The Communications Intern will: draft and edit text for blogging and social media efforts, shape communications best practices and innovative resources, participate in communications-related brainstorming sessions, research media markets, contribute to the development of email lists, attend relevant events and meetings and assist the Communications and Resource Development Officer with other tasks to be determined.

Candidates should have impeccable written and oral communications skills and demonstrated experience in roles that include marketing, writing, editing, press interactions, design and layout, and social media. Also beneficial is an interest in WOW’s programs and policy issues. Experience using online email platforms, back-end website platforms, and Wordpress is a plus. Remote work is an option for this internship.

5. Program Interns (1-4 per semester)- will work alongside program staff to better serve WOW’s diverse network while promoting WOW’s brand and image. Programs include the Elder Economic Security Initiativeā„¢ (which focuses on the aging population), Family Economic Security Program (working women and families), Special Populations projects (domestic violence survivors, ex-offenders, tribal members and others), and Local Programs (women and families in the DC metro area).

Program interns will: assist in the research of relevant state and federal policies concerning the economic security of women and families across the lifespan (income security, housing, supports and benefits, health care, etc.); compose text for briefs, fact sheets, blogs, and social media; attend coalition meetings, briefings and congressional hearings; contribute to WOW’s newsletter and other communications between WOW and our partners; perform administrative tasks and otherwise assist each program manager as needed.

Note: Please specify interest in a particular program, with the understanding that candidates may be asked to intern with a different program or across programs as appropriate.
